Understanding the Army Body Fat Calculator
The US Army uses a specific tape test method to measure body fat percentage for soldiers who exceed the screening weight in AR 600-9. This circumference-based method provides an estimate of body fat using measurements of the neck, waist, and for women, the hips.
The Army Body Fat Formula
Male Formula
BF% = 86.010 × log10(waist - neck) - 70.041 × log10(height) + 36.76
Female Formula
BF% = 163.205 × log10(waist + hip - neck) - 97.684 × log10(height) - 78.387
How to Take Measurements
- Neck: Measure at a point just below the larynx (Adam's apple), perpendicular to the long axis of the neck
- Waist: Measure at the navel level, keeping the tape horizontal
- Hips (women): Measure at the widest point of the buttocks
Important Note
This calculator provides an estimate based on the Army formula. Official Army body fat assessments must be conducted by trained personnel following AR 600-9 procedures. Results may vary from official measurements.
Frequently Asked Questions
How accurate is the Army tape test for measuring body fat?
The Army tape test (circumference method) has a margin of error of approximately 3-4% compared to more accurate methods like DEXA scans. It can underestimate body fat in some individuals and overestimate in others, particularly for very muscular soldiers. Despite limitations, it remains the standard method due to its simplicity and low cost.
What are the Army body fat percentage limits?
Army body fat limits vary by age and gender. For men: 20% (ages 17-20), 22% (21-27), 24% (28-39), and 26% (40+). For women: 30% (ages 17-20), 32% (21-27), 34% (28-39), and 36% (40+). Soldiers exceeding these limits may be enrolled in the Army Body Composition Program.
How do I properly take measurements for the Army body fat test?
For the neck, measure just below the Adam's apple, keeping the tape level. For the waist, measure at the navel level with the tape horizontal. For women, also measure hips at the widest point of the buttocks. All measurements should be taken three times and averaged, rounded to the nearest half-inch.
What happens if I exceed the Army body fat standard?
Soldiers who exceed body fat standards are typically enrolled in the Army Body Composition Program (ABCP). They receive counseling, are flagged from favorable actions (promotions, awards), and must show progress within 6 months. Failure to meet standards can eventually lead to separation from service.
