| Stone | st | Imperial (UK) | 14 lbs |
| Metric Ton | t | Metric | 1000 kg |
Weight vs Mass
Technically, weight and mass are different. Mass is the amount of matter in an object (measured in kg), while weight is the force of gravity on that mass (measured in Newtons). In everyday usage, we often use them interchangeably.
Metric System
Used worldwide for scientific purposes and in most countries for everyday use. Based on powers of 10, making conversions simple.
Imperial System
Used primarily in the United States, and partially in the UK. Includes pounds, ounces, and stones.
Conversion Tip
To quickly estimate kg to lbs: multiply by 2 and add 10%. For example, 70 kg x 2 = 140, plus 10% (14) = 154 lbs. (Actual: 154.3 lbs)
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I convert kilograms to pounds?
Multiply kilograms by 2.205 to get pounds. For example, 70 kg x 2.205 = 154.3 lbs. For a quick estimate, multiply by 2 and add 10% (70 x 2 = 140, plus 14 = 154). To convert pounds to kilograms, divide by 2.205 or multiply by 0.454.
What is the difference between weight and mass?
Mass measures the amount of matter in an object and stays constant (measured in kilograms). Weight is the force of gravity acting on that mass (technically measured in Newtons). On the Moon, your mass is the same, but your weight is about 1/6 of Earth weight. In everyday use, we often use these terms interchangeably.
What is a stone and where is it used?
A stone is an imperial unit equal to 14 pounds (6.35 kg). It's primarily used in the United Kingdom and Ireland for measuring body weight. For example, a person weighing 154 lbs would be 11 stone. The term dates back to ancient trade practices of using actual stones as counterweights.
Why do some countries use kilograms and others use pounds?
Most countries use the metric system (kilograms) as it's the international scientific standard and uses simple base-10 conversions. The United States, Liberia, and Myanmar primarily use the imperial system (pounds). The UK uses a mix - officially metric but many people still use stones and pounds for body weight.
