Landscaping Material Guide

Calculating Material Needs

To calculate how much material you need, multiply the length × width × depth of your area, then convert to cubic yards. One cubic yard equals 27 cubic feet.

Volume Formula

Cubic Yards = (L × W × D) ÷ 324
Where L and W are in feet, D is in inches

Types of Gravel

Pea Gravel

Small, rounded stones (3/8"). Good for walkways, patios, and decorative use. Easy to walk on but can migrate.

Crushed Stone

Angular stones that pack tightly. Ideal for driveways and base material. Less migration than round gravel.

River Rock

Smooth, rounded stones (1-3"). Great for drainage, dry creek beds, and decorative landscaping.

Decomposed Granite

Fine granite particles that pack firmly. Natural look for paths and patios. Can be stabilized for harder surface.

Buying Tips

  • Order 10-15% extra for compaction and uneven ground
  • Bulk delivery is usually cheaper than bags for large projects
  • Most suppliers sell by the ton or cubic yard
  • Get quotes from multiple suppliers—prices vary significantly
  • Check delivery fees—they can add $50-150 to your order
  • Wet materials weigh more—account for moisture in tonnage

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate how much gravel I need?

Measure your area's length, width, and desired depth. Multiply these together, then divide by 324 to get cubic yards (if using feet and inches). Formula: Cubic Yards = (Length x Width x Depth in inches) / 324.

How much does a cubic yard of gravel weigh?

Gravel typically weighs 2,800-3,000 pounds (1.4-1.5 tons) per cubic yard. Weight varies by type: pea gravel is lighter (~2,600 lb/yd), while crushed stone is heavier (~2,700-3,000 lb/yd).

How deep should gravel be for a driveway?

For driveways, use 3-4 inches of gravel over a compacted base. Heavy traffic areas may need 4-6 inches. Use crushed stone (not pea gravel) for driveways as it compacts and interlocks better.

Should I order gravel by the ton or cubic yard?

Suppliers sell by both measurements. Cubic yards measure volume while tons measure weight. For ordering, 1 cubic yard of gravel equals approximately 1.4 tons. Order 10-15% extra for compaction and uneven ground.
